okay, i talk a ton about loving mexicanly and it’s all fun and games until i realize people have the wrong idea. i think that there may be this misconception that i think loving mexicanly is The Best way to love/is superior etc. but that isn’t what i’m really talking about. i feel like loving Mexicanly is marked by sacrifice and devotion. that isn’t even necessarily a good thing, so i don’t think it’s bad if that isn’t how someone feels/expresses love. it’s obviously very easy to go too far with those two concepts and for them to get messy and destructive. loving mexicanly honestly needs to make you straight up question if you have a personality disorder. it’s deeply excruciating. not enough people talk about that aspect. to love someone with so much devotion that you would be willing to do virtually anything for them and to be willing to sacrifice so much (of yourself, especially) is a heavy burden to carry. but to feel love feels dope. so it’s kind of masochistic. maybe the keywords i’d use for loving mexicanly are sacrifice, devotion, loyalty, and yearning. i’d even venture to say it’s obsessive and perhaps even morbid at times…
the easiest way for me to explain is to just say to listen to pierce the veil because they’re fucking crazy but they get it because… well… they’re mexican and emo LOL like c’mon. selfish machines is probably THE loving-mexicanly album to me… but for anyone unfamiliar, i’d say the thing about PTV’s songs that make them a prime example of mexican love is how intense they are. when i was explaining it to manu, i brought up the song million dollar houses and he suddenly understood exactly what i meant. the lyrics are from the perspective of the singer, vic's, dad and how he’s broken bones for his wife while providing for them and he’s only ever done that for her--and oh wow there’s a beautiful part during the bridge where he says “maybe we’re meant to lose the ones we love, but i’ll fight for you till then” and well i just think that’s so beautiful because he’s acknowledging that there’s a chance they may not wind up together but he doesn’t even fucking care and he’ll still work tirelessly and endure extreme physical harm all because he loves her so much in that moment and he just wants to run away and she’s HIS HOPE!!! fuck. FUCK!!!! that’s so mexican. but as i was saying, whenever they write about love, it's masochistic. he'll sing about feeling beneath the person he loves (like calling himself a parasite…) and the extreme lengths he’d go to in order to be together (even dying!!!!!!), how he’s nothing if he isn’t with his lover, his willingness to get mistreated, etc. and idk it’s just like. wow... i’ll just have a section of lyrics/songs somewhere at the end. sorry this is horribly disorganized.
i also hope that loving mexicanly doesn’t get conflated with romantic love because, for me at least, when i talk about loving mexicanly, it doesn’t necessarily implicate romance. i've had friends i love mexicanly and i think there are people who i’ve liked romantically but not mexicanly. BUT i will say that even though i think you can platonically love someone mexicanly, i do think that mexican love is at its prime when it’s romantic. that’s also when it’s the most excruciating. so even if it's most often romantic, it isn't always. plus, stereotypes of what it's like to be loved mexicanly are rooted in family dynamics... like, i think loyalty is generally expected in families, but i know that there's also this stereotype of mexican/latino families being very big/warm/close and such. but there's also this flipside that i feel like only my other mexican or latino friends have discussed which is the expectation to be unhealthily loyal to your family. even if they fuck you over extremely horribly, there's this sense of obligation instilled in you to put up with it because that's your family and that's just what you're supposed to do. and so i think that that sense of intense and undying loyalty, even (ESPECIALLY) to a detriment, carries over to types of love other than just familial. so just consider that maybe...
even if someone loves with devotion/sacrifice/etc., that doesn’t automatically qualify it as loving mexicanly. there are people who love with a lot of loyalty and whatever but don’t love mexicanly. not even every mexican loves mexicanly. i want to say maybe it’s a sense of passion but i’m not quite sure if that’s it. it’s a very specific vibe that can’t be perfectly explained. you have it or you don’t. you just have to use your intuition. if your intuition sucks, though, then maybe don’t. there are people i dislike who love mexicanly and people i love who don’t love mexicanly, so it isn’t even a diss if i think someone doesn't. i love gerard way deeply and i think they understand what it means to love mexicanly (the demolition lovers story...) but they don't love mexicanly themselves.
i want to note that loving mexicanly doesn't have to be painful and can just be very sweet without the heartache. despite how devastating it can feel, i'd say it feels insanely good to love mexicanly when it's sweet. but because its intensity is its defining factor, that means ALL of the feelings when you love someone are intense. when you love someone mexicanly it's like "aw yay i have sooo much love for this person i'd do anything for them" and because it's intense, the feelings of love/passion/happiness/etc. are euphoric, but when things aren't great then they REALLY suck. but even if you're in love and things are great, there's still going to be that willingness to do intense and crazy things, even if the dire urge isn't actively present. i realize i mainly talked about the darker and obsessive part of it, but loving mexicanly shouldn't be reduced to the fucked up and evil elements.... more than anything, it's about the immense, over-the-top and passionate love. think grand gestures of affection and devotion idk. i feel like the OBSESSION part is a side effect of the devotion becoming too much.
Loving someone mexicanly isn't contingent on reciprocation. hannah had a question about that so i figured i'd elaborate. i honestly think that unrequited love perhaps emphasizes the strength of Mexican love and how it can be deeply gut-wrenching... because now it's like, "wow, i would wrestle the sun, the moon, and the stars for this person but it doesn't even matter" and now you just look kind of pathetic and you feel all horrible about having so much love for someone who doesn't really gaf. loving someone you can't have... that's where the yearning REALLY comes in. but it isn't even something you should feel bad or embarrassed about. just think of it as "it doesn't matter if this person loves me the same way or not because i still have this genuine and immense love for them" and will it still hurt..? likely... but mexican lovers are DEVOTED, REMEMBER THAT!!!!! love is never a waste... the point of loving mexicanly isn't for that person to reciprocate, it's loving that person devotedly simply because you love them and well you just can't control that.
lowkey tho i know heeellllaaaa mexicans that cheat. they cheat with a passion so maybe passion is in fact the defining marker of mexican love... could be passionate-sweet vs passionate-cheat. me personally i'm a passionate-sweet mexican.
